Hop on the trail for downhill fun, stop off on the trail for a picnic and cycle to Everton, Tarrawingee or all th way to Wangaratta.

Grab a bike and visit cellar doors and local producers like the the Milawa Cheese Company and Milawa Mustards, drop into a cafe or restaurant for a coffee and a refuel along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail.

Simply cycle at your own pace whilst sampling and collecting goodies from providores and wineries. Stop to sample wine or local produce and meet the locals who helped to grow and make it.

Beechworth Downhill...

Its as simple as riding down hill! This is the best route on the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. Starting in Beechworth at the old station you head along a flat section past a few wineries and then head down through cuttings, over bridges and through little forest copses.


Views along the trail of farmland, the surrounding hills and landscapes. Simply call your tour guide when you have had enough and they will collect you from the old Everton station and return you to Beechworth.

Sandy Creek Bridge...

This picture perfect trail follows lake Hume from Tallangatta to Wodonga, a stunning ride with amazing views of the water, hills & natural grass lands. river tribe adventures provides transportation to and from the trail along with multiple exit points along the route.

This tour takes you to one of the most iconic cycle bridges in Australia. River Tribe transport you to Tallangatta. here you can take a look around town before heading out on the trail. enjoy the trail as it follows the Hume Dam with views of rolling hills, open pasture and along the way you may spot a few eagles or maybe a wedge tail.

Guests stop at the sandy creek bridge where river tribe provide you with a local produce picnic with drinks and the perfect view. after your picnic you can continue along the trail until you reach wodonga or end at one of the reserves along the way. River Tribe provide cycle hire, picnic, drinks transportation to and from wangaratta or beechworth. Allow for a full day adventure.

PEDAL FOR PRODUCE MILAWA

Additional Information

  Grab a bike and visit cellar doors, local producers drop into a cafe or restaurant for a coffee and a refuel along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. Cycle at your own pace whilst sampling and collecting goodies from cafes and providores. Stop to sample wine or local produce and meet the locals who helped to grow and make it.


  • Starting in Wangaratta head South along the flat rail trail. Pass by fields, cows and a small lavander farm
  • Arrive at Sam Mirandah winery and stop for a refreshing sample of whites and reds. Consider stopping for lunch? to early? keep going...
  • Pop into John Gehrigs in Oxley and peruse the menu of wines. We like the dry and unsweetened Riesling but its all good here.
  • Just round the corner is Oxley Estate, try the sweet wine after sampling the whites and reds - mmm feeling hungry by now...
  • Cycle to Milawa past more cows, fields and an old brick 3 storey barn.
  • Turn right to Brown Brothers, mayabe stop for a 2 or 3 course lunch with matched wine before sampling the extensive wine tasting menu. Stock up on Brown Brothers produce of jams and other treats?
  • Back at the Milawa precinct (you past it on the way to Brown Bros) is the olive and gift shop and Gelati and a few great little eateries... 
  • Just 10 minutes up the road pop into Milawa Mustards and sample the amazing mustards with Honey, Rosemary to chilli and more.
  • Cycle up the road to Milawa Cheese Company and Wood Park wines. After sampling and a few purchases maybe have a sweet treat or a coffee before heading back to Wangaratta or calling River Tribe for a shuttle.

Guests can start in Milawa, Oxley or Wangaratta.

On the way back in the shuttle...

  • Amulet and Indigo Vineyards are only available on the road not on the trail [Beechworth Wangaratta Road]), Optional upgrade: ask your guide to stop on the way past if he has time and you can upgrade your tour by 1 hour for $69.

Wineries provide postage service, wine club memberships and delivery services. You can also ask River Tribe to pick up any purchases on the way back to Beechworth providing it is before they close.

 Worth a look...

  • Lake Sambell and the Chinese Gardens.
  • Beechworth Goal, Burke Museum and the Courthouse.
  • Lots of great shops and boutique offerings down the main streets.

Down the hill...

Here is a bit of a plan for your ride down the hill... 

  • From Beechworth cycle downhill along the rail trail past little creeks, distant hills and gums tree dotted fields of cows and sheep
  • Pull into Pennyweight winery (about 20 minutes down the rail trail from Beechworth) and taste the spectacular wines from the bio-dynamic vineyard (postage options are available for any purchases). 
  • Leaving Pennyweight behind continue downhill, maybe you take your feet off the pedals as the wind blows past you, you could put the break on or you could try to get up to 40km hour as you travel down the trail.
  • If you brought a picnic stop and picnic under a tree, with a view, enjoy the stillness, company and food.
  • Back on the trail for more downhill fun, pull up at Everton or Tarrawingee station for a rest and a drink.
  • Hop back on the pedals and head to Wangaratta (another 20km) along the flatter part of the rail trail, here you will pedal past many fields, cows, sheep and Australian native birds n bees.

Jelly legs...

 

Jelly legs? its time to depart the trail. Call your tour tour guide and they will pick you up and take you to you back to Beechworth (allow 15 minutes). Nominated pick up points are:

  • Everton Train Station (located on the trail) this option is included in the tour cost
  • Tarrawingee train station (located on the trail), this option is included in the tour cost
  • Wangaratta, Apex Park. For guests requiring a pick up from Wangaratta this is an additional fee of $15/guest minimum 2

The main trail, Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, is over 120km long complemented by surrounding trails, peddle to produce, world class mountain bike tracks and the High Country Rail Trail.

MURRAY TO MOUNTAINS PACKAGE - THE ITINERARY

Need some inspiration...

 

Here is a suggested Itinerary to help you... Start in either Wangaratta or Bright. The following is an example Itinerary based on the route from Wangaratta.

DAY 1 - WANGARATTA
Check out the local area with the following options (suggestions only):

  • Check out the CBD and take a walk along the river trail maybe for for a dip in the Ovens River at Sydney Beach or Frank Garth Reserve.
  • Pedal to Produce in Milawa^.
  • Kayak the Ovens River with River Tribes exclusive kayaking options^.
  • Check out the Warby Ranges National Park. Take a hike with options from 1 to 4 hours^. Ask for  further details.
  • Check into your accommodation.
  • Walk 2 minutes to town for dinner^.

DAY 2 - BEECHWORTH

  • Load up and head out. Maybe stop at the Ovens River Precinct area for a hearty breakfast and a good coffee. Get a picnic lunch from a local producer such as King Valley Fine foods.^
  • Cycle 40km to Beechworth.
  • Take some stops at scenery points and at stations for a rest and lunch and to take in the view.
  • Drop into Pennyweights winery before you get to Beechworth. ^
  • Check into Beechworth accommodation.
  • Explore boutique shops, historic precincts, Beechworths Bridge Road Brewery, Beechworth Honey a massage and take a Gorge or lake walk.^

DAY 3 - BRIGHT

  •  Load up and head out for breakfast and amazing coffee. Get a picnic lunch from one of the many great cafes.^
  • Cycle 70km to Bright.
  • Stops along the way may include Gapsted and Boyntons vineyards, the rail trail cafe or the Red Stag for a byte and taste.^
  • Jump in the Ovens River to cool off along the way or just enjoy the emerging Alpine mountains.
  • Enjoy a rewarding and well deserved beer at the Bright Brewery before checking into your accommodation.^

​DAY 3 & 4

  • Bright has plenty to do, here are a few ideas^:
    • ​4WD drive tour into the surrounding alpine areas.
    • Mountain bike tours
    • Abseiling at Mt Buffalo
    • ​Cycle to Wandiligong
    • river swimming, chocolate tasting and plenty of great cafes
  • Transfer back to Wangaratta in the morning or afternoon.

Luggage, bikes and guests can be transferred with ease. This pick-up and drop off service goes anywhere you need and from from only $20/person. The costs below are for up to 4 guests for additional guests please add $10/guest (includes bike, luggage and guest).
