Wineglass Bay in Tasmania: The most beautiful beach in the world

Wineglass Bay

Many people say that the most beautiful beaches are in Thailand, but there is no way. The most beautiful beach in the world is in Tasmania, in what is known as Wineglass Bay. And the best thing is that this place is still a real insider tip in Australia. I am reporting on my stay in Wineglass Bay in Freycinet National Park.

Is Wineglass Bay in Tasmania worth a visit?

Wineglass Bay in Tasmania

Wineglass Bay is located on the Freycinet Peninsula, on the east coast of Tasmania, not far from Hobart and Swansea. The area is one of Australia’s most beautiful natural areas due to its bright blue water, white sand, and grey and pink rocks.

Part of the area is a national park. This can be explored on foot within four days as part of the award-winning Freycinet Experience Walk. But Wineglass Bay also has a lot to offer for a short day trip with just a few hours’ stay.

Photo tip: To capture the size and unique shape of the bay in a photo, I recommend you go to the 454 meter high Mount Amos. The hike with one easy climbing section takes about 3 hours there and back.

Getting to Freycinet National ParkFreycinet National Park

There is no direct flight from Germany to Tasmania, so I booked my flight separately from Melbourne. If a low-cost airline is enough for you, then I highly recommend TigerAir. You will save money that way.

The flight from Melbourne to Hobart only takes a little over an hour, and if you are in Tasmania for a few days, I recommend leaving your heavy luggage in Melbourne. Once you arrive in Tasmania, you should rent a car. It is then about 2.5 hours by car to Wineglass Bay.

First impression: Ireland in Australia?Wineglass Bay Lookout

  • Location: Freycinet
  • Must-See: Wineglass Bay Lookout
  • Water temperature: 12 to 17 degrees
  • Hotel tip: Friendly Beaches Lodge
  • Best time to travel: November to April

On the way to Freycinet National Park, the landscape is green, and sheep are in the pastures. There is no one around. As much as Tasmania reminded me of Ireland, its nature is very special and varied. It ranges from deep forests and fat wombats on the road to the tropical Wineglass Bay.

When I arrive, with an incomparable view over the seemingly endless expanse of the bay, I am speechless. The sand is pristine white, and the water ripples gently and carefully onto the beach as if it does not want to disturb the peace.

Alone in the most beautiful bay in the world

Because of its beauty, you would think that Wineglass Bay would be as crowded as Maya Beach in Thailand, but luckily, it is not. When I visited, we were the only people on the long beach, and we could walk through the shallow sapphire waters and watch fish for hours without seeing anyone else.

Add to that the warm sun on your face, the gentle sound of the waves, and the cries of exotic birds—a small paradise in little Tasmania. We just didn’t want to go swimming, though. With water temperatures of 12 to 17 degrees, that’s not advisable.

Book accommodation in advance

Nevertheless, you can stay longer. Many beautiful lodges, including numerous eco-lodges, are located in idyllic locations near the middle of nature. Although it is common in Australia to just walk into hostels and ask for a room, in Tasmania, it is advisable to look a little in advance.

Since Wineglass Bay is particularly popular with newlyweds for their honeymoon, there can be some competition for the best accommodation during the high season. That’s why booking your accommodation at the same time as your flight is a good idea.

ConclusionMona Museum of Old and New Art Hobart Tasmania

I know that there is enough to see in Australia to last a lifetime, but if you are going to make the long journey to fly down under, please PLEASE don’t miss out on Tasmania. After all, there are dream beaches and adorable wombats that look exactly like big, fat hamsters. That’s enough of an argument, isn’t it?

So make sure you spend a few days in Tasmania and at least one day at Wineglass Bay. If you don’t, you’re missing out.

And since you’re landing in Hobart and flying back out again anyway, I’d recommend visiting the MONA Museum (Museum of Old and New Art). You can easily spend half or a day in Australia’s largest privately funded museum. And if you still have a bit of time afterwards, take a quick stroll through the botanical gardens.
